For the first time in history, Africa holds the presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20).
From 1 December 2024 to 30 November 2025, South Africa leads
the world’s premier forum for economic cooperation.
Our presidency is built around the theme:

Guided by the spirit of Ubuntu, South Africa’s leadership emphasizes that our collective future depends on shared prosperity and mutual respect.

What Is the G20?
Think of the G20 as the world’s economic steering committee
- Brings together 19 leading economies + the EU + the African Union.
- Represents 85% of global GDP, 75% of trade, and ⅔ of humanity.
- Was founded in 1999 after financial crises, but today addresses climate change, health, digital innovation, debt, and security.

“The Africa We Want” is the African Union’s long-term blueprint for inclusive growth, integration, and prosperity by the centenary of the AU in 2063.

South Africa’s 2025 G20 Priorities
Under Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability, the agenda focuses on:


These flow through two tracks:
Sherpa Track
Trade, agriculture, health, anti-corruption.
Finance Track
Taxation, macroeconomic stability, sustainable finance.
South Africa will host 130+ working groups and 23 ministerial meetings, alongside engagement groups like Youth 20, Business 20, and Think 20. The year culminates with the Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, November 2025.
