Job Purpose:
Contribute to the development of reputation management, marketing, and communications strategies by delivering the Global Markets programme. This includes promoting South Africa as a competitive destination by managing and implementing the brand and communications programmes in partnership with stakeholders.
Key Responsibility Areas:
The role will essentially have three functions: 1) administering, 2) reporting, and 3) management.
Specifically, Programme Manager: Global Markets will, with minimal supervision, support the programme in the following ways:
- Supporting the development of programme plans
- Direct and manage programme activations/events
- Support the building, maintenance and enhancement of relationships with key stakeholders
- Responsible for the management and coordination of relevant internal organisational reporting
- Working with and through Brand SA’s Research department to use research insights and analysis to inform programme design
- Working with and through Brand SA’s Communications department to support Global Markets’ communications plans and engage with media on related work.
- Working with and through Brand SA’s Marketing department to position the nation brand positively in global markets.
Minimum Qualification requirements & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, International Relations/ Economics / Business Management / Communications or equivalent.
- Postgraduate degree in Marketing, International Relations/ Economics / Business Management / Communications (Added advantage).
- 5 years of marketing, partnership/stakeholder relations, international relations, communications, and project management experience, of which 3 years should be at the management level.
- Experience in place/brand promotion, destination marketing, investment, and export promotion will be an added advantage.
Key Performance Areas:
- Contribute to the development of Brand South Africa’s business plan and Global Markets unit annual performance and operations plans.
Participate in relevant strategic planning sessions i.e., Five Years Strategic Planning, Midterm Review, Annual Performance Planning and Operations Planning Sessions development.
• Develop Global Markets inputs into Brand South Africa’s, annual performance plan and operations plan.
• This includes alignment of the Annual Performance and Operations Plans to Brand South Africa’s Business Plan. - Contribute to the development of programme specific projects and initiatives.
• With reference to Brand South Africa’s Annual Performance plan and signed MoU’s with priority stakeholders by initiating and developing the implementation of plans to activate the delivery of a project/initiative / campaign in line with the integrated marketing and communications programme and stakeholder expectations.
• Establish relationships with the right decision-makers and influencers and canvass all input from geographic and stakeholder plans and target group information. - Sell the project/initiative / campaign plan for buy-in and approval (sign-off) with relevant stakeholder priority base (levels, locations, platforms, decision-makers, beneficiaries).
• Sell the project/campaign / initiative to the relevant stakeholder bases and decision-makers / beneficiaries to ensure buy-in in terms of the content, tone, roll-out mechanism(s), budget, audience target(s), collaborative ownership, timelines and output.
• Working with Brand SA’s Marketing unit, act as a champion and guardian of Brand South Africa’s’ s values and brand identity, ensuring messaging, positioning, tone of voice, visual identity is consistent and in line with the brand guidelines, across all channels and in all activities.
• Scan the wider public policy environment to identify and exploit opportunities for future work where supportive of the strategic aims of Brand South Africa and to develop leads to establish relationships with public policy makers and influencers and identify opportunities for joint future work where appropriate. (E.g. new international relations strategy, diplomacy rules for sectors and geographic regions).
• Feedback stakeholder inputs, scanning of the environment, and other relevant information (budgets, changing priorities) back to Marketing and Communications for refinement and amendment in the activation plans to ensure sign-off. - International Relations.
• Initiate, engage and maintain contact with representatives of foreign Governments, South African missions abroad, international private sector, and civil society organisations to inform them of Brand South Africa’s work in key strategic markets. - Risk Management.
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the stakeholder-implemented initiatives (including risks) and reflect this in the quarterly reporting in accordance with the contracted performance measurement and business plan scorecard of the organisation. - Compliance, monitoring, and reporting.
• Monitor resource spend and financial expenditure in accordance with the approved project plans.
• Ensure adherence to the project corporate identity, copy right, correct representation, referencing, necessary Brand South Africa support to effect the objectives of the stakeholder roll-out plans.
• This function also entails brand monitoring to ensure brand alignment.
• Provide relevant support to GM and Country Heads to ensure timely submission of concepts and compliance related reports. - Financial management/oversight and compliance.
• Manage financial resources effectively, budget planning and allocation. Monitor expenditure in accordance with operational plans/ project plans and ensure compliance with relevant policies. - Other
• In exceptional cases, the incumbent may be required to render support beyond the duties and responsibilities covered by the scope of this job profile. Such a request shall be reasonable and would be deemed necessary by management in the pursuance of the needs of the organisation at that time.
Required Technical Skills, Competencies and Attributes:
- International experience or function in an international coordination role is an advantage.
- General understanding of the political and legislative environment (domestic and international).
- Thorough knowledge of the workings of the business and macro-economic environment (domestic and international).
- Understanding the socio-economic environment (domestic and international).
- Working knowledge of systems and processes and how they contribute to organisational performance.
- Advanced knowledge of how to determine value from a customer perspective.
- Excellent business acumen, i.e. strategic ability to position and sell Brand South Africa mandate and initiatives in response to emerging political, business and environmental trends.
- Excellent presentation skills, i.e. the ability to use the right presentation techniques and emphasise the right content to influence and persuade.
- Media management, i.e. Ability to deal with media in a professional manner during media tours; at strategic Brand SA and/ or stakeholder engagements.
- Above average interpersonal and communication skills to engage credibly with people at different levels and with different needs (public relations).
- Marketing skills, i.e. the ability to identify and capture a target market or audience’s needs and sell a message branded with the identified need.
- Excellent negotiation and ‘deal-making’ skills.
- Advanced MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Competent in project management and lateral leadership, i.e. ability to get things done through co-ordinating different role players in working together without formally being in charge of them.
- Excellent proposal and account / portfolio planning ability.
- Self-management, i.e. well-developed skills to structure own work, work alone and take initiative to get what is needed resourcefully and within proper governance rules and structures.
- Results oriented (output driven).
- Thorough and excellent follow-through ability.
- Willingness to work extended hours and travel substantively (within and across borders).
